"Be a Psychological Consultant"
---A clinical psychology project for college students
---Chienhui Kung
Objectives:
Normally "Clinical Psychology " is a requirement course for
psychology major students. Students have to know various theories of clinical psychology
as well as learn to look at mental problems from different perspectives.Instead of
traditional literal presentation, I will let students take research approaches to learn
clinical psychology in depth. The objectives of this project include:
- Students will organize several 4- person study groups to elaborate the definition of
terms in clinical psychology. They will become good at searching for information from the
Internet.
- Students will learn various theories related to mental problems by reading, searching
from WWW, and group discussion. They also need to learn describing mental problems by
exact psychological terms.
- Students will gain an insight into different branches of clinical
psychology---Psychoanalytic, Cognitive,Neurobiological Psychology...Therefore, they are
able to look at the same mental problem from different perspectives.
- Students will choose a favorite perspective to explore their own and the group members'
mental problems. They also will try to construct a consultative or therapy procedure for
one of the group members.
- Students will share their discovery and insight with different study groups.
Moreover, they will prepare themselves well for being capable
of improving their own and others' mental health.

Clinical Psychology
¡@

Every study group will meet for at least once every week .
Every student will give their twenty-min oral presentation in class for twice.
¡@
Necessary Materials:
For Each Person
- Internet access .
- Textbooks and reference books on clinical psychology.
- Word processor.
¡@
General Procedure and Activities:
Group discussion before class begins.
Gather information from the Internet .Learn how to obtain valuable information from
journals.
Exchange information with group members by using E-mail
Ask questions from instructors both by E-mail and appointment.
Consult a psychological export on the web site.
Use the Internet to find cases related to mental problems occurred in real life or
movies( Rainman, Fatal Attraction...)
Study one of the group member's ( as client) mental problems.
Start the consult or psychotherapy procedure.
E-mail clients for therapy appointment, construction of emotional relationship &
data recording.
Develop an efficient method to solve the problems of clients. Then, email a clinical
psychologist to evaluate the practicality.
Search related laws from the web sites to understand the ethnic rules about
psychological therapy and consult.
Give oral presentation about discovery and insight for mental problems in class.
Write an academic research paper on clinical psychology.
¡@
Using the Internet to Conduct Research:
Since students will use the Internet to gather data, they will be able to review a great
deal of information within limited time. Therefore, they can save time and money on
information gathering.
Various kinds of materials on different web sites made students have wide and in-depth
knowledges of clinical psychology.
Different approaches and perspectives from different authors of web sites will motivate
students to form their own viewpoints.
The process of Internet search is very similar to the process of independent research.
Students will be trained into disciplined researchers by frequently using the Internet.
"Clinical Psychology" is a field worthy of studying by the general
public.Furthermore, more and more relevant information on web sites indeed informs clinical
psychology itself. Probably in the near future the general public can just go to a web
site to accept psychotherapy. Therefore, our students will learn new technology in
psychotherapy after they complete this project by incorporating the Internet.

The Value of Using the Internet for This Lesson:
I think the value of using the Internet for this lesson is generally high because:
- Using the Internet provides both teachers and students with rich information to find and
answer their research questions.
- Besides information access, students learn search strategies, critical evaluation,
decision making, problem solving, and communication skills by using the Internet.
- The Internet assists teachers to teach students how to go on a research independently.
- The Internet improve the technology and techniques (psychological tests, questionnaires,
recording...) applyed in psychotherapy.
- The Internet shortens the distance between different researchers with the same interests
so that they can exchange information as well as idea !
